What Is The Elderly And Disabled Waiver Program

What Is The Elderly And Disabled Waiver Program

The Elderly and Disabled Waiver Program (EDWP)  serves medicaid eligible frail, elderly, and disabled Georgians by providing certain services not normally covered by Medicaid for a person with intellectual, developmental, physical disabilities. These services can take place in the person’s home or in the community. Eligible members should be getting physician ordered services to be considered eligible for this program.

  • Age: Must be at least 65 years old (or, if younger than 65, meet certain disability requirements),
  • Medically fragile:Be impaired by physical limitations.
  • Medically Necessary Services: Must require medically necessary skilled nursing care and/or personal care support and Choose to receive services in your home or community instead of a nursing home.
  • Medicaid Eligibility: Must be eligible for Medicaid.
  • Doctor Approval: Must get Doctor approval for intermediate nursing home care and the development of a care plan
  • One Waiver Program: Participate in only one waiver program at a time.

How to get approved

STEP 1: Make sure you are eligible

STEP 2:  Gather what you'll need

  • Verification of income.
  • Verification of assets, such as bank accounts or property.
  • Verification of citizenship
  • Doctor approval for intermediate nursing home care
  • Doctor approval of a care plan

STEP 3: Submit your application 

The Georgia Division of aging services aging services administers EDWP through the area agencies on aging. you can apply for EDWP by calling your area agency on aging (AAA).

  • Call the toll-free, state wide number for the area agency on aging at 866-552-4464
  • Once connected, an AAA staff member will screen you by asking questions about your situation.
  • This Screening will determine eligibility  and urgency of need, which affects you'r placement on the waiting list.

STEP 4: NEXT STEPS

  • you will be contacted when your name comes to the top of the waiting list. you will undergo a in-home assessment to determine the level of care you need.
  • As part of the assessment, the nurse or care coordinator will work with you and your caregiver to develop a care plan.
